Deana’s art is a marriage of photography and abstract expressionist painting.

Better defined as “extractionism,” the final painting is influenced by the content of the photograph as well as how the photo is modified and expressed onto the canvas via painting.

The process begins with an image from Deana’s personal library of photographs. It is prepared and printed on archival paper, then gessoed onto a canvas where the painting stage is influenced by the photo.

Photos typically focus on urban environments – buildings, transport systems, and activity centers – or natural ones. This theme is derived from Deana’s passion for cities and place; her background in architecture, urban design, and real estate development; and the serenity, beauty, and wonder found in nature.
