Bio:

Marcia McMillen is an abstract painter working in acrylics. Marcia states: “in many ways, my work is a subjective response to nature. Though the paintings are non-representational, they stem from my time spent outside of my urban living environment, observing and responding to natural phenomena.” Specifically, Marcia’s artist-in-residence experiences at Fire Island National Seashore and Lakeside Studio on the shore of Lake Michigan provided her with the opportunity to explore and contemplate this influence. She is a graduate of the University of Michigan, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Marcia works with the canvas laid horizontally in order to build up liquid layers of opaque and translucent color over and into each other. She strives toward creating a pictorial depth that suggests both the motion of water and the ethereality of atmospheric space. Marcia is interested in painting’s ambiguous condition, being simultaneously material substance and illusory space.
